collections
Release Date: June 2009 The Infinity collection is comprised of compositions that explore various examples of visual feedback loops, both electronic (LCD monitors) and organic (mirrors) in nature. The result is significantly more abstract than previous volumes of the Kaleidoscope Project, which made production of the soundtracks a challenge, because the subject of a composition usually provides some sort of inspiration when creating it's soundtrack. Thus, abstract experimentation was the direction taken for the "music" in this collection, which ultimately makes it the least accessible one to date.
Release Date: March 2009 The compositions that make up Volume 3: Lightbox all use an Artograph Pro Series artist light box as their stage. Due to the intimate nature of the set-up, these pieces are more narrative than those included in the previous collections. There is more to these compositions than simple waves of color. This collection also marks the switch to a 16:9 frame, which was accomplished by creating each piece in HD and then sizing it down to fit the SD 4:3 screen, resulting in the familiar letterbox effect.
Release Date: January 2009 As you may have guessed, the subject matter of the compositions in this collection are trees in their various states throughout the cycle of the year. My cycle begins with Winter, because it was the winter tree that inspired me to resurrect the Kaleidoscope Project, and then progresses through to Autumn. I've found it difficult to write down my feelings about this collection without it sounding a bit pretentious, but I'll say that I feel it represents my vision of what this project is all about, better than any other will, because of the fact that it uses such a common thing as a tree for it's subject. On a side note, while the winter tree was my inspiration, it proved to be the most difficult subject. The final compositions I produced for it never seemed to satisfy what I had in mind. Ultimately, it was a fortunate problem because it prevented me from completing an early collection. Soon, I found myself working on Spring and Summer, which made me realize I had to let the cycle play out, so that I could produce this collection.
Release Date: January 2009 Volume 1: Archetypes is a collection of the first six compositions created during the Summer of 2006, when the Kaleidoscope Project was first conceived. The Intersection composition was the only one to be completed before I lost interest in the concept. A year later, I included it in a collection titled Stillbirth, a compilation of unfulfilled projects. Unexpectedly, in January of last year, I was inspired by the sight of bare tree branches stretching across the winter sky, and I began creating new compositions. It's impossible for me to explain the excitement of once again fully believing in an idea, after years of feeling like I was, creatively speaking, merely going through the motions. Suddenly, everywhere I looked there was another subject, another idea, another inspiration to create. While the newer compositions are a bit more complex and interesting, I felt it was important to complete the five remaining original compositions, before moving on to the others, to gain some closure on that era. |
