This was one of the original kaleidoscopic visuals created on June 4, 2006. The subject was the crowd during the 2004 Highland Square "Art In The Square" festival, where I had a table set-up with some pieces I made. The footage was a static shot while my camera set on the table top.

Notes:
This was one of the original kaleidoscopic visuals created in June 2006. The subject of the piece is an XBOX 360 Arcade game titled "Geometry Wars" which I shot while a friend played it on his large, Sony DLP HDTV, which allowed me to capture footage without issues an interlaced subject would have created.

Volume 1: Archetypes
Audio Type:

Notes:
This was the inaugural kaleidoscopic composition and it was not planned. At the time, I was fascinated by the looks on people's faces as they turned past me at an intersection. They were of an instant and seemed pure and honest to me. I went-out that day with my camera set-up on a tripod in my car's passenger side seat, filming the cars as they passed whenever I was the first car at a red light.
Depending on how you look at it... I'd say fortunately I wasn't able to capture the footage I was looking for, and to salvage the day I ended-up assembling this first kaleidoscopic composition.
The final composition impressed me so much, I instantly saw it as only the first in a large collection of pieces that used everyday footage to create spectacular imagery. However, I was concerned that I was too close to the concept. Observing it objectively, it could be seen as something a readymade digital video filter could produce.
Because the pieces took so long to produce, due to the technology I was using at the time, and the fact that they might not be appreciated the way I thought they should, I essentially gave-up on the project for the next year and a half.

Notes:
Early on a Sunday morning in late June 2008, I woke-up to find that a large bush had magically grown overnite outside my kitchen window. At least, that's what it looked like. Actually, it was a large piece of the tree that stood in-between my house and my neighbor's house that had fallen during the previous night's storm. As I documented the event, I captured a bit of footage for a potential composition. I shot footage using both my SD and HDV cameras, but the HDV did such a better job of capturing the vivid colors a detail of the leaves and trunk that I decided to down-convert the HDV footage to SD for this piece.

Desktop (Composite)
Creation Period:
Spring 2009
Collection:
Volume 4: Infinity
Audio Type:

Notes:
This composition combines Desktop (Session A) and Desktop (Session B). The primary soundtrack ("Copper Mine") was inspired by the opening of Richard Wagner's opera "Das Rheingold" as it was what I was listening to when I captured the footage. It fit perfectly, so I created something similar.

Notes:
This is my favorite composition to date. No post-production manipulation or tweaking was needed. The light was sculpted during the shoot. The soundtrack (easily the most accessible one from the Infinity collection) also marks the emergence of some newly developed audio techniques that will be used in future pieces. Also, while I'm not a fan of being in front of the camera, it was unavoidable in this situation, and I'm actually pleased with the results.

To name drop a bit, I've called this my "Brakhage Moment" because the fleeting moments where I appear in the frame remind me of pieces from him. Or, maybe I'm just a huge Stan Brakhage mark and think if I mention him in the same breath as myself that something will rub-off?!?
